BASIC METABOLIC RATE (BMR)

Basic Metabolic Rate is not the same as maintenance calories, as sinister forces of confusion would have you believe. Basic Metabolic Rate represents the minimum caloric intake you need for boring stuff like breathing, heart beat, blood flow and body temperature regulation. No activities above and beyond basic physiological functioning in a resting state are included. You can figure out your BMR by using this the formula:


bodyweight(lbs) x (11 for male, 10 for female) / 24.


This means multiply your weight (in lbs) by either 11 or 10 and divide the number by 24 (24 being the number of hours in a day natch). P.S. This number will prove to be indispensable, as you'll need to know your BMR to calculate the MET values for various world saving activities.

But did you know hard water is better for you than soft water? Hard water has a high mineral content (mainly calcium and magnesium in carbonate form, which the body requires in significant amounts) while soft water is stripped of the mineral content and has added sodium (something you may not need). In fact, cardiovascular mortality in men decreases as water hardness increases, as was shown in the county boroughs of England and Wales from 1961 and 1971. But while our drinking waters mineral content is generally A Good Thing™, fluoride in the water is not. Fluoride is a poison. It is biologically active even in the smallest doses and negatively affects hormonal and enzymatic activity in the body. If your water is treated with fluoride, use a filtering system or drink bottled water.


THREE SIMPLE HEALTH INDICATORS

The Body Mass Indicator (BMI) has been accepted as the de facto indicator of general health according to height and weight, and has been used for over 100 years by hospitals, employers, fitness clubs, insurance companies and drug manufacturers. Unfortunately, it sucks with extreme vorticity because the measurement doesn't account for body composition - specifically whether any weight over the "norm" is muscle or fat. Muscle is denser than fat, so according to the BMI, many muscular people are incorrectly classified as overweight (if you're not sure whether it relates to you, here's a test. Look in the mirror. If you have no neck, the BMI isn't for you).


According to Tim Cole, a professor of medical statistics, a far more accurate indicator of physical well-being is a Waist Circumference Measurement (WCM), since health problems occur when the surplus weight is fat and it is accumulated in the hips and abdominal area. Men with a waistband of more than 37 inches (94 cm) and women thicker than 32 cm (80 cm) are at an increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disease.


Wait. There's yet another test devised by German and Austrian researchers which also works on the waistband principle and it's called the Waist-to-Tallness Ratio (WTR). With this test, men shoot for a WTR of 0.55 or less and women 0.53 or below. To determine what your waist should be for your height, take your height in inches and multiply it by 0.55 for men and 0.53 for women.


Anyway, if your still interested in the BMI as a standard point of reference, here's how to read it. The American Institute for Cancer Research claims anywhere from 18.5 to 25 to be ideal for a civilian, while anything 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight. Individuals are considered obese anywhere above a score of 30.


Here is a way of determining your BMI score:


  1. You need to know your height in meters. You can do this by dividing your height (in inches) by 39.36.

  2. If your weight in in pounds, divide your weight by 2.2 to determine your weight in kilograms.

  3. Square your height (in meters). To square a number means to multiply the number by itself.

  4. Finally, divide your weight (which you figured into kilograms) by your squared height to get your BMI reading.
